Midwest Sliders of Ypsilanti News Release
The Gateway Grizzles ended the six game winning streak for the Midwest Sliders of Ypsilanti 6-5, in an extra inning thriller at EMU's Oestrike Stadium. Midwest had late inning heroics by Robbie Knapp that kept them in the game, but lost in the 10th.
Gateway came out and put up four runs in the first frame of the game. Thanks to two Slider errors, four unearned runs came around to score.
Brandon Johnson hit a solo homer in the fourth to extend the Grizzles lead five-nothing.
Kyle Wink made his first start with the Sliders and threw well in five innings, only allowing one earned run off the homerun. Manager Eric Coleman called on Douglas Brooks to pitch in the sixth.
Ben Barrone cut the lead to 2-5 in the fourth when he pulled a two-run homer over the left field wall. They tacked on another run in the seventh when Zack Pace singled, and later scored on a Jimmy Baker sacrifice fly to center field.
Although there were many Slider opportunities, they didn't push across any more runs until the bottom of the ninth. Knapp came on to pinch hit with one out, and the bases loaded. Knapp hit a clutch frozen rope that scored two runs, and tied the game 5-5.
Brooks walked the leadoff batter in the 10th inning and was pulled. Arshwin Asjes came in and let up the game-winning triple that brought in a run to make it 6-5.
Brooks suffered the loss, although he pitched four innings only allowing one hit and one run. Kevin Hammon got the win in relief for the Grizzles.
Saturdays game at Oestrike begins at 6:05 p.m. Dexter native Michael Penn (4-4, 5.47) will start for the Sliders as they look to start another win streak. Saturday and Sunday are the Sliders last two home games before the four day All Star break next week.
