Beach Bums Fall to Windy City in Series Opener

CRESTWOOD, Ill. - The Traverse City Beach Bums dropped a 12-2 decision to the Windy City ThunderBolts in the opener of a series at Standard Bank Stadium on Friday night.

Windy City opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning. With two outs Vinnie Scarduzio reached on a bloop double that fell into centerfield among three players. The next hitter made Beach Bums starter Brett Bostelman pay as All-Star J.T. Restko belted a two-run homer down the line in left.

Brett Bostelman did not make it out of the third inning as Windy City scored six times to open an 8-0 advantage. Nate Hall recorded a two-run double in the frame and Bryan Cook later connected on a two-run homer as the ThunderBolts sent 11 men to the plate in the inning. Bostelman was hit with his second loss, allowing eight runs on nine hits with three walks and a strikeout.

B.J. Hagen relieved Bostelman and threw 3.1 innings. He did allow a pair of runs in the fifth. Jared Locke threw the final two frames.

Traverse City scored single runs in the eighth and ninth against Windy City reliever Tim Dennehy. Andrew Stafford singled with one out in the eighth and Kyle Maunus, who had entered in the bottom of the seventh, doubled him home. Corey Whiting doubled in the ninth and scored on a groundout by Brad Miller.

Andrew Stafford and John Alonso had two hits each for the Beach Bums, who finished with nine hits in the contest. Dylan Axelrod threw seven shutout innings to record the win for the ThunderBolts. He struck out seven.

The series will continue tomorrow night when RHP Jason Kiley (3-5, 4.64) takes to the hill for the Beach Bums. Windy City will counter with RHP Brandon Garner (1-1, 6.26). First pitch is scheduled for 8:05 pm. The contest can be heard live on The Fox FM.
