Erie's Late Rally Comes up Short Against Altoona

Erie came up short in the opener against Altoona and fell 7-5.

Adam Wolf opened his day with four scoreless frames. In the fifth, Joe Perez came through with a bases-loaded, three-run double with two out to give the Curve a 3-0 lead.

The SeaWolves finally struck against Aaron Shortridge in the sixth. Ben Malgeri led off with his 11th home run of the season to make it 3-1.

Altoona connected on a pair of home runs of their own in the top seventh inning against Michael Bienlien. Matt Gorski hit a solo shot to make it 4-1. Two batters later, Carter Bins blasted a two-run homer to make it 6-1.

In the bottom of the frame, Erie loaded the bases ahead of a two-run single by Julio Rodriguez to make it 6-3. In the eighth inning, Corey Joyce connected on an RBI single to make it 6-4.

Altoona got an insurance run against Layne Henderson in the top of the ninth to make it 7-4.

In the ninth, Jace Jung ripped an RBI single against Tyler Samaniego to make it 7-5. Chris Meyers batted as the potential go-ahead run but grounded into a double play.

Shortridge (10-7) got the win. Wolf (3-4) took the loss. Samaniego earned his sixth save.

The series continues at 6:05 p.m. on Wednesday as Bryan Sammons pitches against Jackson Wolf.
