Evansville Otters News Release

(EVANSVILLE, INDIANA) "" Closer Eric Massingham made history on Friday night at Bosse Field, recording his 57th save, a Frontier League record, in the Otters 4-2 win over Gateway.

Massingham tied Bobby Chandler with his 56th save on Wednesday and surpassed the pitcher with a scoreless ninth inning on Friday in front of the home fans.

"It is an unreal feeling," said Massingham. "I tried to go out there and act like it was any other save but I knew in the back of my mind it was a little more important. It was nice to get it done on the first try."

Massingham joined the Otters in 2011, setting the Evansville Otters single season record that season and the franchise career record in 2012. He only has one blown save in 58 chances with the Evansville Otters.

"I am most proud of the consistency," added Massingham.

Manager Andy McCauley was also very complimentary of his closer for the last three years.

"Mass has meant everything to me," said McCauley. "We had a lot of games where we only needed to pitch eight innings because Mass was waiting in the ninth.

Evansville fell behind 2-0 in the game until Nick Schwaner hit a game-tying two run home run in the fourth. Schwaner then pushed Evansville ahead with a solo home run in the sixth inning, his second home run of the night.

The Otters added an RBI single from John Schultz in the seventh as Massingham maintained the 4-2 lead for the record setting save.

Evansville will now look for a series win on Saturday night against the Gateway Grizzlies. The Otters will have RHP Trevor Walch (2-3, 3.97 ERA) facing Grizzlies RHP Tim Brown (11-2, 2.79 ERA).

It is Breast Cancer Awareness Night sponsored by Econo Lodge and Marathon. The Otters will be wearing special pink colored jerseys that will be auctioned off during the game. All proceeds will benefit the Susan G. Komen Foundation. There will also be postgame fireworks as well. First pitch is set for 6:35 pm CDT. Fans can tune in to the Otters pregame show on WUEV 91.5 FM beginning at 6:15 pm CDT.
