
Offense and Strong Relief Defeat Joliet

Joliet, IL - The Southern Illinois Miners defeated the Joliet Slammers 6-5 on Friday night at Silver Cross Field as they offense recorded eleven hits. Race Parmenter (3-1) earned his third victory as he pitched 3 1/3 innings in relief and didn't allow a run. He gave up two hits and recorded two strikeouts. The Miners are now 44-35 on the season.
The Slammers scored three runs off Miners starter Brett Kennedy in the bottom of the first inning to take a 3-0 lead. The Miners answered right back in the top of the second inning off Slammers starter Chuck Lofgren as they scored four runs to take a 4-3 lead. Phil Butler walked with the bases loaded to put the first run on the board and Andrew Cohn reached on a fielder's choice to score Jason Ganek. Carlos Mendez hit his 100th hit of the season to bring in two runs and give the Miners the lead. Mendez leads the Frontier League in hits.
Lofgren left after 1 2/3 innings pitched as he allowed four runs off two hits and five walks. Joliet tied the game off Kennedy at 4-4 in the bottom of the second inning. Southern Illinois took the lead 6-4 in the top of the fifth inning as Steven Liddle hit a RBI single to score Jereme Milons and Cannon Lester hit a RBI triple to score Liddle. The triple hit by Lester is his seventh of the season and is tied with Daniel Bowman of Lake Erie for most in the Frontier League.
The Slammers scored another run off Kennedy in the bottom of the fifth inning to cut the Miners lead to 6-5. Kennedy left the game after 4 2/3 innings as he allowed five runs off eight hits. He walked two batters and recorded one strikeout.
Despite loading the bases with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning, Ronald Uviedo earned his fifth save as he got Slammers designated hitter Kyle Maunus to ground into a double play.
The Miners and return to action on Saturday at Silver Cross Field. Miners reliever Pete Perez (4-1, 1.59 ERA) will be making his first professional start. First pitch gets underway at 6:05 pm in Joliet.
