Lake Erie Crushers News Release

AVON, Ohio -- The Lake Erie Crushers used the long ball and great pitching to take the opening game of their series against the Frontier Greys, as they won their ninth game in a row, in a 5-1 victory on Friday night at All Pro Freight Stadium.

The victory for the Crushers (48-31) was their ninth in a row, and they are now all by themselves in first place in the Frontier League's Eastern division. In addition, they are now 22-6 since the All-Star Break, and have won 17 of their last 19. The loss for the Greys (28-51) was their fifth in seven games against the Crushers this season.

Alex Kaminsky (7-5) held the Greys offense in check, as he allowed just a run on six hits over 7.1 innings of action to come away with the victory, while the Crushers used homeruns late from Russ Moldenhauer, Andrew Davis and Anderson Hidalgo to pull away.

Lake Erie plated the first run of the contest in the bottom of the first inning, and did so without recording any hits. A leadoff walk was issued to Craig Hertler, and he stole second base before advancing to third on Seth Granger's fly out to right. Bowman brought Hertler home moments later on a sacrifice fly.

The Greys didn't wait long to tie things up, as they knotted the game at 1-1 in the top of the second. Kaminsky retired the first two batters of the inning, before surrendering his lone run of the game, on Brock McCallister's solo homerun.

Lake Erie scored solo runs in the fourth and sixth, before plating two more runs in the eighth inning to seal the deal.

Davis stroked a one out triple in the fourth inning, and was on third base with two down, when former Crusher Jonathan Kountis (0-3) threw a wild pitch to bring Davis home, giving the Crushers a 2-1 advantage.

Moldenhauer increased the Lake Erie advantage when he belted his 10th homer of the season in the bottom of the sixth inning, and both Davis and Hidalgo smashed solo bombs in the bottom of the eighth inning to help the Crushers pull away.

Kaminsky's victory gives him three in his last four starts, and he's now won five times in his last eight starts, dating back to the beginning of July. Jordan Wellander (4) worked 1.2 scoreless innings of no-hit relief to grab the save. Kountis took the loss after allowing three runs on four hits over six innings.

Davis and Granger led the charge for the Crushers offensively, providing two hits apiece. Davis, a four time Frontier League All-Star, is now 9-for-16 on the current homestand with six runs scored and 10 RBIs. Hertler's first inning walk extended his on base streak to 17 games.

The Crushers will continue their three game series with the Frontier Greys at All Pro Freight Stadium on Saturday night. Right-hander Jason Wilson (4-5, 5.81) will get the start for the Crushers, and the Greys will counter with righty Joe Zeller (8-7, 3.47). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
