Springfield Falcons News Release

Springfield, Mass. – Jeff Edinger, a member of the Holy Name Peewees, has been named the Pediatric Dental Associates of East Longmeadow GSL Player of the Month for November. Jeff was honored during a trophy presentation prior to the Falcons' game versus the Albany River Rats at the Springfield Civic Center on Saturday. Dr. Vinny Trimboli, Falcons team captain and leading scorer Shane Willis, and GSL president Buddy Lafleur participated in the presentation.

Jeff knows the importance of playing hockey with heart. While only 12-years-old, he has already developed a passion for the game and brings that passion to the ice every game. He works hard every shift. To put it simply, he plays with heart. Jeff does this in spite of having had to undergo open-heart surgery twice. Jeff began skating at age 3. At age 5, Jeff found himself in Providence, Rhode Island at Hasbro Children's Hospital where he received a new aortic valve because his had been destroyed by an infection. Last season he began experiencing a shortness of breath and other symptoms that led doctors to conclude another operation may be required. After an effort by doctors at Mass General was unable to correct the problem Jeff had his second open-heart surgery in June. As soon as the surgeons gave him clearance to play Jeff returned to the ice in October.

Following his first surgery Jeff served as a spokesman for pediatric heart surgery. Dr. Richard A. Hopkins, Jeff's surgeon at Children's Hospital wrote in a letter to Jeff, "... many thanks for all that you have done to help our pediatric heart program. I always get a thrill seeing you in your hockey gear."

Jeff continues to make himself available as a spokesman for the pediatric heart program although his mother says thankfully there hasn't been a call in the last few years from a parent or child facing the critical surgery Jeff has undergone. Jeff stands ready to share his experience with other children facing surgery and he is thankful to be playing the game he loves.
