Binghamton Senators News Release
LAST WEEK: The Binghamton Senators took four of a possible six points last weekend and currently sit in fourth place in the Eastern Division with 33 points, one point behind third place Norfolk and two points out of second (Wilkes-Barre, 35 pts.).
FRIDAY, DECEMBER 17th vs. BRIDGEPORT(5-1 W): The Sens tied a season high on Friday night scoring five goals in a decisive 5-1 victory against division rival Bridgeport. ANTOINE VERMETTE, JOSH LANGFELD, and BRANDON BOCHENSKI each netted one goal for Binghamton while captain CHRIS KELLY recorded two. KEVIN COLLEY'S second period marker was the only time Bridgeport could get the puck past Binghamton goaltender RAY EMERY who played outstanding for the Sens stopping 38 of 39 shots. Ex- BC Icemen goaltender DIETER KOCHAN took the loss for the Sound Tigers making 33 saves on 38 shots. Binghamton played a solid special teams game going 2 for 4 on the power play and kept Bridgeport's man advantage squad in check by killing off all four chances they had.
SATURDAY, DECEMBER 18th vs. ST. JOHN'S (1-0 L): After scoring five goals the previous night the Binghamton offense sputtered on Saturday failing to find the back of the net at all and dropped a 1-0 contest to the visiting St. John's Maple Leafs. The loss marked the third in as many meeting with St. John's this season. NATHAN BARRETT'S sixth goal of the season at the 6:03 mark of the middle stanza proved to be the game winner and was the only goal of the contest. RAY EMERY stopped 23 of 24 shots in the loss for Binghamton while St. Johns' JEAN-SEBASTIEN AUBIN turned away all 34 Binghamton shots. Both teams' power play unit went 0 for 4 on the evening.
SUNDAY, DECEMBER 19th @ PHILADELPHIA (3-2 SOW): Binghamton closed out its three-game weekend on Sunday night with a visit to East Division leading Philadelphia. The two clubs traded goals in the first period with CHRIS KELLY scoring at the 3:10 mark of the first period and Philadelphia's PATRICK SHARP was able to beat BILLY THOMPSON 4:24 into the middle frame, trying the game 1-1. KELLY and SHARP traded tallies once again in the third period. KELLY put the Sens up 2-1 at 14:35 of the final stanza, but the Sens could not hold on as SHARP tied the game at 2-2 with just 4.1 seconds left in regulation. The teams skated a scoreless five-minute overtime period before Binghamton received shootout goals from DENIS HAMEL and BRANDON BOCHENSKI to claim the bonus point. JON SIM scored the Phantom's lone shootout goal. THOMPSON picked up the win for Binghamton stopping 29 of 31 shots. ANTERO NIITTYMAKI made 26 saves on 28 shots for Philadelphia. Both clubs were 0 for 2 on the power play.
THIS WEEK: The Senators return home this week on Wednesday and Sunday for two divisional games against the Albany River Rats.
WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 22nd and SUNDAY, DECEMBER 26th vs. Albany (7:05 p.m.): Albany makes their second and third trips to the Arena this week. JOSH LANGFELD and ANTON VOLCHENKOV each picked up power-play goals in that game while AHREN NITTEL recorded a second period goal and ALEKSANDER SUGLOBOV tied the game at 2-2 late in the third period. SUGLOBOV then put home the game winner 49 seconds into the extra frame. Albany currently holds a 9-13-4-3 record and sits in last place in the East Division with 25 points.
