
Early Runs Help Iowa Down Sacramento 3-1 in Series Opener

DES MOINES, Iowa (Aug. 27, 2015) - The Iowa Cubs (74-58) scored two runs in the first inning and never looked back on the way to a 3-1 win over the Sacramento River Cats (66-67) in Pacific Coast League action at Principal Park on Thursday evening.
Iowa got out to a quick start in the bottom of the first inning when Christian Villanueva clubbed a two-RBI single to right field to drive in John Andreoli and Javy Baez, taking an early 2-0 lead.
Sacramento notched its only run in the top of the second when Nick Noonan grounded out to second to drive in a run to make it 2-1.
Chris Valaika put the nail in the coffin in the bottom of the fourth when he knocked a mammoth home run to left field.
Left-hander Tsuyoshi Wada (4-5) started on the mound and earned the win for Iowa. He allowed one earned run on six hits and one walk with three strikeouts over 6.2 innings.
Iowa lefty Ryan Buchter spun a scoreless 1.1 innings to record his PCL-leading 15th hold. Right-hander Blake Cooper closed out the game with 0.2 innings worth of scoreless pitching to pick up his fifth save of the year.
Left-hander Nik Turley (6-7) suffered the loss for the River Cats. He allowed three earned runs on seven hits and two walks with seven strikeouts over 6.0 innings.
Mike Olt, Villanueva and Valaika led Iowa offensively with two hits apiece. Villanueva led Iowa with two RBI on the night.
Ryan Lollis, Trevor Brown and Carlos Triunfel paced Sacramento offensively. They each notched two hits in the loss.
The I-Cubs will play game two a four-game series Friday against the Sacramento River Cats. First pitch is scheduled for 7:08 p.m. CT. Right-hander Dallas Beeler (6-5, 4.52) is scheduled for Iowa against River Cats lefty Ty Blach (11-10, 4.05). The game can be heard live on AM 940, 104.5 FM, and live-streamed at Iowacubs.com. The On-Deck Circle Pre-game Show will begin 6:40 p.m. CT.
