Fresno Grizzlies News Release

PAPILLION, Neb. - The Fresno Grizzlies (79-53) continued to struggle on offense with runners in scoring position on way to a series opening 5-1 loss to the Omaha Storm Chasers (74-59) at Werner Park Thursday night. The night before they went 0-8 with RISP in a 3-2 loss at Iowa and tonight drummed up only one hit in eight at bats in such instances.

The Storm Chasers put Fresno in an early hole with a four-run second inning that saw six straight batters reach base on starter Mike Hauschild (L; 5 ER/4.2 IP). Alex Gordon, on rehab assignment as he recovers from a groin injury, drove in a run during the rally with a single to center and recorded three total hits on the night. The start by Hauschild marked the fifth time at Triple-A that he's failed to reach the 5.0 IP mark, which accounts for all of his four losses. When he pitches 5.0 or more innings (eight starts), he's 6-0 with a 1.30 ERA (7 ER/48.1 IP).

Preston Tucker was the only Fresno batter to record a multiHIT effort and is 4-17 (.235) with a double and RBI in five games since being optioned by the Astros. Max Stassi recorded the only extra-base hit for the Grizzlies when he doubled to lead off the fifth. He was part of a potential rally when Jonathan Villar singled and Alex Presley walked to load the bases with one out, but Tyler White hit into an RBI ground out and Preston Tucker lined a ball into the glove of shortstop Dusty Coleman to end the inning, who was shifted perfectly behind the second base bag.

L.J. Hoes had an opportunity to produce runs when he stepped to the plate with the bases loaded and two outs in the fourth, but his soft liner was picked out of the air by a leaping Whit Merrifield a few steps onto the grass in right field to end the inning.

The Grizzlies have combined to hit .176 (24-136) with nine extra-base hits over the course of the last five games (1-4 record). They'll return to Werner Park on Friday night for the second game of the four-game set, sending left-hander Luis Cruz to the mound to face lefty Chris Dwyer. First pitch is set for 5:05 PM PT and can be heard locally in Fresno on 1430-AM KYNO.
