Round Rock Express News Release

ROUND ROCK, Texas - The Round Rock Express (71-62) offense went silent Thursday night at Dell Diamond as the Las Vegas 51s (74-59) took game one, 2-0. The blanking marked the 12th shutout loss of the season for the E-Train.

Express starter Robert Coello and 51s RHP Tim Stauffer each worked diligently through the opening three innings as both lineups went hitless in the first third of the series opener. Coello began the fourth inning with his third walk of the game that beckoned ML rehabber Kirk Nieuwenhuis to the plate with no outs. Nieuwenhuis finally put the scoreboard operator to work with a two-run bomb off Coello that silenced the crowd and provided the 51s with the 2-0 benefit. Coello fashioned a ground out and back-to-back strikeouts to bolt out of the inning.

Coello (1-2, 3.63) recovered well to string together a respectable final three innings of work, leaving the contest after 7.0 innings pitched with four hits, two runs (two earned), three walks and four punch-outs. Southpaw Alex Claudio took the helm from Coello and began the eighth with a ground out. The lefty then surrendered a single to 51s 2B Dilson Herrera and saw Herrera swipe second with DH Darrell Ceciliani batting. Another ground out put the second out on the board while Herrera advanced to third with two away. RHP Roman Mendez was called in to get out of the inning and struck out 3B Eric Campbell to send the game to the bottom of the eighth.

Stauffer continued to shine in the bottom of the eight by crafting his fifth 1-2-3 inning of the night while fooling the Round Rock hitters.

Round Rock finally found some momentum in the bottom of the ninth as Stauffer showed signs of slowing. RF Jared Hoying opened the home half of the inning with a single and made his way to second on a Stauffer wild pitch. A fly out from CF Drew Stubbs moved Hoying to third and signaled the end of Stauffer's (4-0, 2.23) outing with 8.1 innings pitched, four hits and five Ks. The Las Vegas bullpen kept Stauffer's shutout in tact thanks to efficient outings from LHP Dario Alvarez and RHP John Church to give the 51s the 1-0 series lead.

Round Rock and Las Vegas continue the series at Dell Diamond with game two tomorrow night at 7:05 p.m. as 51s RHP Seth Lugo (2-0, 3.06) toes the rubber against an Express pitcher still to be announced.
