DALY CITY, Calif. - The Colorado Eagles stayed perfect in San Francisco with a 2-1 shootout win over the Bulls, pushing their record to 3-0-0 at the Cow Palace and 5-0-0 overall against the expansion club. The Eagles, again playing with a short bench -- just 14 skaters dressed -- edged the Bulls in a goaltending duel that marked the 4th game of a six-game road trip. The teams will meet again Friday night.
In a tightly contested first frame, the Bulls out-shot the Eagles, 8-7, and got the period's lone goal. The tally came midway through the opening session on a somewhat broken play in which Torrey Mitchell was able to get the puck past Adam Brown from the low slot.
The second stanza was similar, except that it was Colorado getting the only goal. It came just under five minutes in when a turnover in the neutral zone led to Devin DiDiomete streaking down the right wing. He attempted a back-door pass across the doorstep, but the Bulls' netminder rejected his feed right back onto the forward's tape for a tap-in tally that tied the game at 1.
Colorado's scoring chances got better as the game went on, but so did Taylor Nelson in the Bull's net. His best save of regulation came with seven minutes left in the third period when he stopped Joey Sides on a quick breakaway. But Brown continued to be his equal at the opposite end of the ice, and the combined solid netminding forced overtime.
In the extra session, the Eagles continued to storm Nelson's net, yet he again negated their scoring attempts to help the home team to a shootout.
The stellar goaltending continued in the shootout, pushing it to eight rounds, with each goalie stopping six of the first seven shooters they faced. But after Kris Belan's attempt sailed wide of Brown's net, Steve Haddon ended the game by finding the back of Nelson's net with a shot, 5-hole, securing the win for the visiting team.
