Colorado Eagles News Release
RIO RANCHO, NM- The Colorado Eagles defeated the New Mexico Scorpions 5-2 Saturday night for their seventh straight victory and improved their record to 7-1-0. All of the Eagles five goals were special teams goals including two shorthanded and three power play goals. Colorado leads the Central Hockey League with seven shorthanded goals this season. Riley Nelson had a goal and two assists and Greg Pankewicz had his league-leading 14th goal of the season. Eagles goaltender Tim Boron made his first professional start and saved 35 of 37 shots to improve his record to 2-0-0. Mike Prpich scored both goals for the Scorpions in their third straight loss to the Eagles. Colorado travels to Arizona to take on the Sundogs on Tuesday night in Prescott Valley at 7:05 p.m. MST.
Riley Nelson put the Eagles up 1-0 on his third shorthanded goal of the season. He was assisted by Ryan Tobler and Les Borsheim and it marked the Eagles sixth shorthanded goal of the season, the team had only 10 shorthanded goals in all of the 2005-06 season. Mike Prpich evened the score for New Mexico at the 16:19 mark of the period on a power play goal, his second goal of the season. In the final minute of the period, the Eagles took the lead once again on a four-on-three goal by Aaron Schneekloth as he was fed a backdoor pass from Riley Nelson. Colorado took the 2-1 lead into the first intermission although they were being out shot 11-10 in the period.
The Eagles continued their second period dominance scoring two goals in the second frame. Chris Hartsburg had an unassisted shorthanded goal at the 8:11 mark of the period, the seventh shorthanded goal of the season for Colorado and second of the night. Greg Pankewicz had his 14th goal of the season that was good enough to add to his highlight reel as he put the puck in between the defenders legs, skated around him and beat Scorpions' goaltender Brad Smith giving the Eagles a 4-1 lead.
Mike Prpich scored his second goal of the game at the 5:58 mark of the third period to cut the Eagles lead to 4-2. It was the first even strength goal of the game for either team and the closest New Mexico would get. Ryan Tobler scored his first goal of the season and third power play goal of the game for Colorado capping the game at 5-2 at the 17:05 mark of the final period. The final buzzer rang and the Colorado Eagles won their third straight game over New Mexico and seventh straight game. The Eagles remain in first place in the Northwest Division with a 7-1-0 record and have 14 points on the season.
