SteelHounds Spoil Sundogs Home Opener

Arizona Sundogs News Release


PRESCOTT VALLEY, Ariz. - 4,845 eager fans packed Tim's Toyota Center in Prescott Valley only to see the visiting Youngstown SteelHounds spoil the Arizona Sundogs home opener. The SteelHounds handed the Sundogs their third straight loss, 6-0. Former Sundog Tab Lardner, traded to Youngstown earlier in the week, helped his new team to the win with a five point effort on the night, tallying 2 goals and three assists. Former Sundog Doug Orr, also tallied a goal on the night.

Arizona's Michael Vernace would be called for hooking just 45 seconds into the contest, giving Youngstown its first of six power plays in the game. Shaun Landolt and Tab Lardner teamed up for both goals in the first frame. Landolt would score the first ever goal in the new arena at 5:50 of the first from Chris Schaffer and Lardner. At 15:19 of the first, Arizona's Chris Greene would be called for charging and Landolt would score his second of the game, this time on the man advantage with Lardner and Brad Patterson assisting on the play.

In the second, the Sundogs would again go down a man early in the period, this time on a Louis-Philippe Martin cross checking call at 1:56 mark. Youngstown would increase its lead to three a minute into the penalty on a Lardner goal from Jeff Alcombrack. The two teams would exchange penalties throughout the period giving each other advantages. At the 10:54 mark, Youngstown and Lardner would strike again, this time on a goal by John Wheaton from Lardner and Patterson. The SteelHounds were not finished, as they would add their fourth goal of the game. Another former Sundog, Doug Orr would score his third goal of the season (first with Youngstown) with less than two minutes remaining in the middle frame. John Neal and Schaffer were credited with assists on the play. With just 23 seconds to play in the period, Martin Doyle and Josh Reed would drop the gloves, each landing several punches. Arizona's Brent Kelly would be called for roughing at the 20:oo mark to close out the second.

As did the second period close, the third would open with Arizona's Jonathan Bernier and Youngstown's Mark Johnson trading blows. Still on the power play from the Kelly roughing call at the end of the second, Lardner would score his second of the game and fifth point from Chris Richards.

Youngstown converted on 3 of 6 power plays while Arizona went 0 for 7. Sundogs netminder Kris Mayotte started in his sixth game of the season for the Sundogs, stopping 18 of 24 shots faced. The SteelHounds' David Currie pitched a shutout, stopping all 26 shots on goal. The two teams face off again tomorrow at 7:00pm.
