Youngstown SteelHounds News Release
Boise, ID - Fueled by four, first period goals and Steve Silverthorn's 25 saves, the Idaho Steelheads cruised to a 6-1 victory over the Stockton Thunder on Saturday night in front of 4,427 fans at Qwest Arena. The win helps the Steelheads (8-1-1-0) remain unbeaten in their last five games, while the Thunder (6-1-0-1) suffer their first regulation setback this season.
The first period onslaught began at 5:31 when Francis Wathier beat Thunder goaltender Devan Dubnyk (23 saves) with a wrist shot from the right circles. Lance Galbraith and Colin Peters got the assists.
Later in the first period, the Steelheads would score twice in 29 seconds to take a 3-0 lead. Galbraith beat Dubnyk at 16:27 with a snap shot from the right circles, with Marty Flichel getting the lone assist. Then Tuomas Mikkonen got to his own rebound and fired the puck into the top shelf over Dubnyk's glove, as Wathier and Peters grabbed the helpers.
With less than one minute remaining in the first period, the Steelheads struck via a five-on-three man advantage as Darrell Hay blasted a shot off the left post and past Dubnyk to give the Steelheads a 4-0 advantage. Derek Nesbitt and Mike Gabinet set up the veteran defenseman's first goal of the season.
After 20 minutes of play, the Steelheads led 4-0 and were out-shooting the Thunder 18-5.
Early in the second period the lead became 5-0 on another two-man advantage tally. Flichel scored for the fifth straight game, uncorking a one-timer from the left circles. Once again Hay and Gabinet found the score sheet on Flichel's team leading eighth of the season, which came at the 52 second mark.
Defenseman Tim O'Connell got the Thunder on the board at 13:59 of the stanza when he got to a rebound just outside the crease and swept the puck past Silverthorn. Steve Slonina, who took the initial shot, and Stephane Goulet assisted on the goal.
Gabinet made the score 6-1 at 15:28 of the second stanza, netting his first of the season. It was the third power play goal of the night for the Steelheads, matching a season-high. On the play, Nesbitt sent the puck towards the far post and it glanced off a couple of bodies where Gabinet slammed it home. Galbraith drew an assist as well.
Thunder goaltender Cam Ellsworth came in to replace Dubnyk to start the third period, a frame in which neither team scored. The Thunder mustered nine shots in the third, while the Steelheads managed just four. The four shots in the period is a season-low for the Steelheads, who finished three-for-nine with the man advantage. The Thunder went zero-for-eight on the power play. With the win, Silverthorn improves to an ECHL-best 8-0-1-0. Dubnyk (5-1-0-0) suffered his first defeat of the year. The final shots were 33-26 in favor of the victors.
