
RiverKings shut out Rayz 4-0

Larry Sterling made 26 saves, and Louis Dumont had two goals as the Memphis RiverKings shutout the Corpus Christi Rayz 4-0 on Military Appreciation Night Saturday at the American Bank Center. The Rayz capped off a winless week, and remain in second place in the Southeast Division. The Rayz will be off until Thursday night when they travel to Austin to take on the Ice Bats. Corpus Christi will then return home for games Saturday Night vs. the New Mexico Scorpions and Sunday afternoon vs. the Arizona Sundogs. The Rayz fell behind by a pair in the first period. Memphis forward Ryan Campbell scored a shorthanded goal at 2:16 from Derek Landmesser to start the scoring. The Kings then added to their lead when Darrell Stoddard came out of the penalty box and had a breakaway where he beat Ron Vogel at 14:16 to make the score 2-0 Kings. Memphis outshot the Rayz 12-9 in the opening period.
The Kings struck again quickly in the second when Louis Dumont scored 47 seconds into the frame. Following the goal, Vogel was pulled for Brent Zelenewich. Zelenewich shut down the Kings for the remainder of the game, but the Rayz couldn't jump onto the scoreboard. Dumont added his second of the game with an empty net goal at 18:17 of the third period.
Vogel made 10 saves on 13 shots and suffered his second straight loss, dropping his record to 3-4. Sterling improved his record to an undefeated 6-0-2 and collected his first shutout of the year. The Kings outshot the Rayz 29-26. The Rayz went 0-7 on the power play and the Kings went 0-5.
The loss was the Rayz third consecutive defeat and dropped their record to 4-6. They remained in second place in the Southeast Division, tied with the Austin Ice Bats. The RiverKings upped their CHL-leading point total to 16 with a record of 7-1-2. Justin Quenneville had his nine-game point streak snapped in the loss.
The Rayz will be off until Thursday night when they travel to Austin to take on the Ice Bats. Corpus Christi will then return home for games Saturday Night vs. the New Mexico Scorpions and Sunday afternoon vs. the Arizona Sundogs.
