SteelHounds Fall Short in Shootout

Prescott Valley, Arizona-----The Youngstown SteelHounds lost 5-4 in a shootout to the Arizona Sundogs in Prescott Valley, AZ Saturday night. The SteelHounds were just 3 of 15 on powerplays on the night but gave a great effort in tying the game at 4 scoring two goals in the third period to send the game into overtime.

Sundogs forward Karl Sellan lit the lamp in the first period on the powerplay as he fired a shot from the top of the left circle that got over the shoulder of Hounds goalie David Currie for the 1-0 lead. Arizona would get another powerplay goal from Cory Stillman as he redirected a shot from wingman Chris Greene for the 2-0 advantage. Hounds forward John Wheaton would cut lead to 2-1 when he shoved in a rebound on the powerplay through the five hole of Sundogs goalie Kris Mayotte.

The Sundogs would take a 3-1 lead in the second period as forward Brent Kelly took a shorthanded breakaway opportunity and fired a short slap shot through the five hole of Currie for the two goal advantage. Newest SteelHound Tab Lardner recorded his third goal in just two games for the Hounds smacking home his own rebound over the pad of Mayotte to cut the Sundog lead to 3-2. Just before the end of the period Arizona forward, L.P. Martin delivered a shot from in between the circles and lit the lamp to give the Sundogs a 4-2 lead after the second period.

The SteelHounds would tie the score in the third with goals by Stephen Margeson and Chris Shaffer. Margeson's powerplay goal came at the 4:11 mark of the period when he fired a shot from the point that got up over the shoulder of Mayotte to cut the Arizona lead to 4-3. Just over six and a half minutes later, Chris Shaffer broke a 2 on 1 opportunity and took the shot from inside the right wing and tied the game at 4-4.

After a scoreless overtime period, L.P. Martin provided the game winning goal for the Sundogs in the shootout.

The SteelHounds outshot the Sundogs 34-23 and Mayotte saved 30 of 34 shots to notch his third victory of the season, while Currie turned away 18 of 23 shots and was saddled with his third loss of the 2006-07 campaign.

The SteelHounds will return home for a six-game homestand starting on Thursday, November 16th as the Tulsa Oilers will come to town for a three-game set.
