Colorado Eagles News Release
BROOMFIELD, CO- The Colorado Eagles held on to win a 4-3 victory over the Rocky Mountain Rage Friday night at the Broomfield Event Center in head coach Chris Stewart's 300th Central Hockey League victory. He is only the third coach in CHL history to reach 300 wins. Colorado held a 4-1 lead going into the third period, gave up two early goals, but held on to win their eighth game of the season. Greg Pankewicz scored his league-leading 16th and 17th goals of the season for Colorado and Marco Emond made 31 saves for his sixth victory of the season. Riley Nelson tallied three assists and now has 18 points in 10 games this season. The Eagles and Rage will face off again tomorrow night at the Budweiser Events Center in the second game of a home-and-home series at 7:05 p.m.
Chris Hartsburg opened the scoring only 3:35 into the first period on a power play goal, he picked up a rebound at the top of the crease and beat Rage goaltender David Guerrera to take a 1-0 lead. John DiPace tied the game for Rocky Mountain six minutes later on a power play goal on assists from Dan Vandermeer and Dominick Noel. The Eagles took a 2-1 lead on captain Greg Pankewicz's 16th goal of the season, but it marked only his second even strength goal of the season. Newly acquired forward Seth Leonard gave the Eagles a 3-1 lead in his first game with the team. He scored a power play goal on a nice feed across the slot from Fraser Filipic. Colorado took the 3-1 lead into the first intermission.
The lone goal scored in the second period was an even strength goal by Greg Pankewicz at the 9:41 mark marking his second even-strength goal of the night. Riley Nelson picked up his third assist of the game on the goal giving the Eagles a 4-1 lead after two periods.
Rocky Mountain quickly made it a one-goal game in the third period. At the 1:09 mark, Mark Wires scored his fourth goal of the season cutting the Eagles lead to 4-2. Two minutes later Kyle Kos capitalized on a power play trimming the Eagles lead to one goal. The Rage had their opportunities to tie the game, but Eagles' goaltender Marco Emond was up to the task. Emond finished the game making 31 saves on 34 shots and improved his record 6-0-0.
The Eagles improved their record to 8-2-0 and remain in first place in the Northwest Division while the Rage record fell to 3-5-2 as they remain in fourth place in the Northwest Division. These two teams will face off again tomorrow night at the Budweiser Events Center in the CHLTV Game of the Week.
