November 17, 2006 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Arizona Sundogs News Release
PRESCOTT VALLEY, Ariz. - After a convincing 7-2 win against one of the Central Hockey League's top teams in the Colorado Eagles, the Arizona Sundogs were handed a 7-1 loss against by the Odessa Jackalopes Friday evening despite outshooting their Southwest Division opponent 46-27. Torrie Wheat scored the lone goal for the Sundogs while starting netminder Chris King was replaced in goal by Kris Mayotte. King gave up four goals in the contest while Mayotte gave up three.
At 5:43 of the first, Arizona's Cory Stillman would give the Jackalopes their first power play of the game after being called for hooking. Odessa's Mike Rutter would score his first of two power play goals in the first period at the 6:48 mark from Nathan Ward and Scott Hillman. Five minutes later Rutter would tally his second of the night from Pascal Bedard and Ward after a Scott Seney interference penalty. At 17:45, Arizona's David Svagrovsky and Odessa's Alex Dunn would square off, both receiving five-minute majors for fighting. Svagrovsky would also collect a two-minute instigator and 10-minute misconduct for the fight.
Less than two-minutes into the second period Odessa picked up where it had left off, this time on a power play goal by Bedard. Don Margettie and Rutter assisted on the play. Arizona would finally get on the board at 9:52 of the second on a Torrie Wheat goal from Dan Laperriere and Cory Stillman. Odessa wasn't finished in the period as Steve Shrum would push one past Arizona's Chris King from Blaine Bablitz and Mike Ramsay. King's four goals allowed on 16 shots would be enough as Sundogs Head Coach and General Manager Marco Pietroniro would substitute Kris Mayotte for the struggling King.
In the third, Mayotte wouldn't fare much better than King as he would allow three goals on 11 shots by Odessa. At 11:42 of the third, Margettie would notch his second point of the night, this time on a goal from Rutter and Andrew Davis. Six minutes later, the Jackalopes would strike again, this time by Chris Brannen from Brian Swiniarski and Scott Hillman. Odessa would cap off the win with less than a minute left in regulation with their fourth power play goal of the night by Swiniarski from Bedard and John Kozoriz. Frustration set in for the Sundogs with Svagrovsky taking his second fight of the game, this time with Odessa's Margettie at the 20-minute mark of the third.
Odessa finished 4 for 10 on the power play while Arizona was unable to score a goal with the man advantage. Mike Gorman stopped all but one of the 46 shots faced for the Jackalopes while starting Arizona netminder King stopped 12 of 16 and replacement goalie Mayotte stopped 8 of 11. Next up for the Sundogs are the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees on Saturday evening in Hidalgo, Texas. The Sundogs are 1-1-0 against the Killer Bees this season. Game time is set for 6:35pm (Arizona time) but will be tape delayed until 7:00pm on 96.7 FM The Wolf, the Official Broadcast Home of the Arizona Sundogs.
