Corpus Christi IceRays News Release

Derrick McIver scored a power play goal 3:43 into overtime to give the Corpus Christi Rayz a 3-2 win over the Austin Ice Bats Thursday night at the Chaparral Ice Center in Austin. McIver teed up a slapshot from the left circle that beat Miguel Beaudry to give Corpus Christi their third win in four games over the Ice Bats. The Rayz improved to 5-6 on the year and moved into sole possession of second place in the Southeast Division. Corpus Christi will have Friday night off before hosting back to back games at the American Bank Center Saturday Night and Sunday afternoon. For information on both games, please call the Rayz at (361) 814-PUCK.

Henry Kuster got the goal scoring started at 1:24 on a power play goal to give the Ice Bats an early 1-0 lead. Kuster beat Ron Vogel with a shot from the left circle. The Rayz had 15 shots in the first period, and were denied for most of the frame by brilliant goaltending from Beaudry. The Rayz finally broke through when Jason Baird sprung Justin Quenneville with a breakaway pass and Quenneville scored to tie the game at 17:58. Quenneville's tally was his team-leading seventh goal of the season and fifth against Austin. The Rayz outshot the Bats 15-10 in the frame.

In the second, the Rayz didn't take long to grab their first lead of the game. Just 14 seconds into period, Corpus Christi took a 2-1 lead when Geno Parrish scored his first goal in a Rayz sweater. Parrish took a centering feed from Quenneville in the corner and ripped a shot past Beaudry from the high slot. The Rayz maintained their lead for most of the period. McIver had a second period penalty shot, after being taken down on a breakaway, but failed on the attempt to give the Rayz a two-goal lead. The Bats knotted the game at 2-2 when John McNabb scored an opportunistic goal on a rebound from the boards behind Vogel at 13:03. McNabb pounced on a loose puck that evaded Vogel and slammed it into the net for is eighth goal of the season.

The teams played a scoreless third period and went to overtime. In the extra session, on a power play, McIver let a howitzer go from the left circle and ended the game. The Rayz win was the second 3-2 overtime victory of the season against the Bats. Vogel earned the win to improve to 4-4 on the year, while Beaudry moved to 2-2-3 with the overtime loss. Corpus Christi improved to ten points on the year (5-6) and snapped a three-game losing skid. Austin's record moved to 3-4-3 for nine points and a tie for third place in the division with the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees. The Rayz went 1-4 on the power play. Austin went 1-2 on the man-advantage.

The Rayz will return to the American Bank Center on Saturday Night and Sunday afternoon for back to back home games.
