Eagles Fall 5-4 to Reign in Shootout LOVELAND, Colo. -The Colorado Eagles (31-14-0-2) late rally earned them a point but was not enough after the shootout, as they fell short 5-4, against the Ontario Reign (27-13-2-4) on Saturday evening at the Budweiser Events Center.
At the 9:04 mark of the first period Reign forward Maxim Kitsyn slid the puck past Eagles netminder, Clarke Saunders to gain the early lead of, 1-0. 13:08 into the first, Ontario forward Norm Ezekiel sent Kitsyn a cross-slot feed which he put past Saunders' five-hole to take the 2-0 lead over Colorado. Just ten seconds later Eagles forward Brock Nixon responded with a goal from the top of the crease to cut into Ontario's lead, 2-1.
5:20 in the second period, Eagles defenseman Teigan Zahn scored his first goal of the season against Reign netminder Joe Cannata, to tie the game 2-2. During a power play at 9:44 in the second, Reign forward Matt White stuffed home a goal to bring the Ontario lead to 3-2. With six seconds left in the second frame Cannata suffered an injury and the Reign brought in emergency backup goaltender Spencer McLay.
Kitsyn scored his third goal 5:57 into the third, which earned him the hat trick. 10:03 into the third, Nixon netted his second goal of the night to shorten Ontario's lead, 4-3. With an assists from Collin Bowman and Nathan Moon, Eagles forward Darryl Bootland deflected a shot past McLay to tie the game, 4-4, at 18:49 in the third.
The Eagles and Reign, tied at 4-4, headed into sudden-death 4-on-4 overtime. After maintaining the 4-4 score in overtime, the Eagles and Reign headed into a shootout. Ontario put two shots past Saunders in the shootout, while McLay turned aside four of the Eagles five shooters to claim the 5-4 shootout victory. The Eagles gained a point in the standings, and are now four points ahead of both Ontario and Idaho in the division.
