FORT WAYNE- In a physical contest that featured a combined 91 minutes in penalties, including 47 from the Kalamazoo Wings, it was the Fort Wayne Komets that hung on to defeat the K-Wings 4-2 Saturday night at Allen County Memorial Coliseum.

There was only one goal in the period, but it occurred right away. Flying out of the gates, Dane Fox notched his team-leading 15th goal of the season just 38 seconds into the game with a slap shot from the right circle.

The goal was the quickest recorded to start a game this season by the K-Wings. Fox's tally extended his point streak to four games and his goal streak to three consecutive games. Sam Ftorek and Matt Caria assisted on the goal. Caria's helper pushed his point streak to seven games.

Fort Wayne pulled even early in the second period with a rebound marker from Mike Embach (17th). Building momentum off of the Embach goal, the Komets jumped ahead midway in the stanza with Paul Crowder's sixth goal of the season.

Taking advantage of a five-minute major penalty, Brett Perlini (9th) rifled a slap shot over the shoulder of Joel Martin to give the Komets a 3-1 lead.

The K-Wings cut the Komets advantage to a single goal late in the period with a power-play goal from Sacha Guimond (4th). Staying red-hot was Eric Kattelus, who extended his point streak to five games, has recorded points in 14 out his last 15 games.

The second period was filled with infractions. The teams combined for 41 minutes in penalties leading to five power-play chances, three for Fort Wayne (1-for-3) and two for Kalamazoo (1-for-2).

In the final minute of regulation, Crowder (7th) added insurance for the Komets netting his second goal of the contest to secure the victory.

The loss snapped the K-Wings seven-game (5-0-0-2) road unbeaten streak.

Kalamazoo will continue a season-long five-game road swing tomorrow, Sunday, February 8th with the second stop of the trip with a 3:05 p.m. encounter at the Indiana Farmers Coliseum against the Indy Fuel.

The K-Wings will return home on Wednesday, February 18th for a 7 p.m. face-off versus the Gwinnett Gladiators on Wacky Wednesday featuring 10-cent hot dogs.
