Eagles Drop First of Three in Alaska

December 28, 2012 - ECHL (ECHL)
Colorado Eagles News Release

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - The Alaska Aces topped the Colorado Eagles, 4-1, to take the first of three meetings in four days between the teams. The game featured two of the league's hottest teams, led by two of the league's hottest goaltenders, and was close until the Aces scored a pair of goals two minutes apart in the final frame.

Alaska used a pair of first period power plays to help build a 14-6 edge in shots, but Adam Brown was exceptional in Colorado's net. The rookie netminder stopped all of the Aces' shots -- many in fine fashion -- to help keep the Western Conference's top team off the scoreboard and send the game to the first intermission tied at 0.

Alaska made good on its third power play of the game at 8:41 of the second period when Joey Crabb found Sean Curry with a back-door play through the crease. At the other end of the ice, Gerald Coleman stopped all four of Colorado's shots in the period (which tied the Eagles' season low for shots in a fame), highlighted just under five minutes in when he robbed Kevin Ulanski with a highlight save; while lying on his stomach, the goalie rolled over from his left to right and stopped the shot with the back of his left skate.

The Eagles were finally able to beat the Aces' goalie to tie the game just over eight minutes into the third period when Dylan Hood took a turnover at his own blue line and beat Coleman 5-hole on a breakaway. But it took the Aces less than two minutes to counter and re-take the lead when Chris Clackson sent a pass from the left corner to a wide open Zach Harrison crashing the low slot.

And just over two minutes later, Alaska took a 3-1 lead with their second power-play tally of the night when Bobby Hughes picked up a rebound on the doorstep and put it past Brown. Clackson then added an empty-netter in the final minute of play to account for the final, 4-1, margin.
