Eagles Down Steelheads in OT
April 1, 2016 - ECHL (ECHL)
Idaho Steelheads News Release
Loveland, CO - Everett Sheen's second tally of the night with 18 seconds left in overtime was the game-winner as the Colorado Eagles (38-26-4) defeated the Idaho Steelheads (36-22-10), 5-4 at Budweiser Events Center. The Eagles clinched a playoff spot and pulled within two points of the Steelheads atop the West Division with four games remaining.
Jesse Mychan jammed his 28th goal of the season through the legs of Philippe Desrosiers at the side of the net with just 14 seconds left in regulation to tie the game 4-4 and cap off a three-goal third period comeback for Colorado. Kyle Ostrow wheeled the puck out of the right-wing corner and threw it to the side of the net, where Mychan spun it right to the front for the tying goal.
The Steelheads led 4-1 after Joe Basaraba's 12th of the season, and tenth in the last 16 games, bounced off of Eagles goaltender Clarke Saunders and into the back of the net just 1:24 into the third period. The Eagles responded quickly, answering with two goals of their own in the next four minutes.
Adrian Veideman crept down from the left point for his 17 goal of the season just 2:25 after Basaraba's goal, snapping a shot from the left faceoff dot over Desrosiers' glove to make it 4-2. Shortly after, Sheen scored his first of the game and 11th of the year, firing a right-wing wrister off the post and then swatting in his own rebound to make it 4-3.
Colorado opened the scoring 6:41 into the game, a deflection at the left post by Ostrow for his 13th goal. Idaho spent a good deal of the first period in the defensive zone, but dominated much of the middle frame with three goals of their own to take the lead, mixed in with two penalty kills and some scrappy play from Corbin Baldwin and Radoslav Illo.
Andrew Carroll netted his tenth of the season 1:17 into the second, a deflection of a clever shot-pass from defenseman Zach Bell. At 16:31, moments after Emil Molin fired a shot off the post, Shawn Boutin snuck down from the right point to one-touch a centering feed from Rob Linsmayer in behind Saunders for his fourth of the year and a 2-1 lead. Molin added to that lead by beating Saunders with his own bouncing rebound 1:32 later for goal number 22, tied for the team lead.
The Steelheads are now 1-3 this season in overtime games against Colorado, dropping the past three. Despite the loss, the Steelheads did earn a point. Desrosiers is now undefeated in regulation in his last 14 starts, going 10-0-4 to establish a new Steelheads goaltending record.
The Steelheads look to answer back against the Eagles tomorrow night at Budweiser Events Center, Colorado's final home game of the season. Puck-drop is scheduled for 7:05pm MT, with the game available on ECHLTV and 1350KTIK.
