Colorado Eagles News Release
(Loveland, CO) -- The Colorado Eagles clinched a spot in the ECHL Kelly Cup Playoffs with a 5-4 overtime win over Idaho on Friday. Colorado scored three goals in the third period to force overtime, as forward Everett Sheen scored two goals on the night, including the game-winner in the extra session.
Colorado took the lead early in the first when forward Kyle Ostrow deflected a pass from the point from defenseman Teigan Zahn to take a 1-0 lead at the 6:41 mark of the opening period. It would be the only goal of the period and the Eagles headed into first intermission with a 1-0 advantage.
The Steelheads came on strong in the middle frame, scoring three goals in the second period. The outburst began when forward Andrew Carroll tipped in a shot from the blue line to tie the game at 1-1 just 1:17 into the period. Idaho continued its scoring streak when defenseman Shawn Boutin scored on a cross-slot pass, making it 2-1 Idaho at the 16:31 mark of the second.
Late in the period, the Steelheads took a 3-1 lead with 1:57 to play, when forward Emil Molin fired a shot that would deflect off an Eagles defenseman and into the net. The 3-1 lead would hold into second intermission.
Idaho scored early in the third period when forward Joe Basaraba took a shot that deflected off of the blocker of Eagles goaltender Clarke Saunders and over his head, falling into the net at the 1:24 mark final period to make it 4-1 Idaho.
Colorado answered with two quick goals, as defenseman Adrian Veideman scored from the bottom of the circle to cut Idaho's lead to 4-2 at the 3:49 mark of the period. Then Sheen slipped the puck behind Steelheads goaltender Phillipe Desrosiers off a rebound for his first goal of the night, cutting the deficit to one at 4-3 with 16:41 to play in the game.
The Eagles tied it up with just 14 seconds to play in the game after pulling Saunders in favor of the extra skater. Forward Jesse Mychan stuffed home a puck in the crease to tie the game at 4-4 and forcing the overtime period.
With 18 seconds to play in the overtime Sheen scored from the slot, taking a pass from defenseman Jake Marto and placing a wrister past the shoulder of Idaho goaltender Phillipe Desrosiers to secure a 5-4 Colorado win.
The victory now runs Colorado's winning streak to five straight and punches their ticket to the playoffs for the 13th consecutive season
The Eagles and Steelheads are back on the ice tomorrow night at the Budweiser Events Center. The puck drops at 7:05 PM MST.
