Dragons pick up eighth shutout of the year with 2-0 win
June 15, 2006 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Dayton Dragons News Release
Dayton, OH - As the June weather has heated up, so have the Dayton Dragons (32-35). Dayton turned in its eighth shutout of the season, with a 2-0 blanking of the Southwest Michigan Devil Rays (32-34). Johnny Cueto (WP, 7-1) tossed 6.2 innings of shutout baseball to pick up his seventh win of the season and Bobby Mosby provided all the offense the Dragons would need with a two run second inning home run, as the Miami Valley's Team won its third straight game in front of 8,713 at Fifth Third Field.
The story heading into the game may have been Cincinnati Reds right hander Matt Belisle (SV,1), who was making a rehab appearance for the Dragons on his return path to the big league club, but it was Cueto and Mosby who stole the show. Following a lead off walk to Habelito Hernandez to open the second inning, Rays starter Matt Walker (LP, 0-1) served up a 390 foot blast to Mosby over the wall in left center giving the Dragons a 2-0 lead. Since returning to the Dragons on June 10th, he has hit safely in all four games he has played going 6-14 (.429) with one homer and two RBI.
Cueto allowed three hits in his 6.2 innings of work to pick up his team leading seventh win of the year. For the first time in 13 starts on the 2006 season, the right hander walked more hitters, three, than he struck out, two, but once again gave the Dragons a quality start. The only real trouble he got in on the night came in the top of the sixth inning when he walked the first two hitters he faced. With two on and none out, Jackson Brennan lined a ball to Hernandez at first, who stepped on the bag to double off Hunter Vick for the second out of the inning. The Dragons nearly pulled off the first triple play in franchise history but Neil Watson was able to beat the throw to second base to avoid the triple play.
Bo Lanier (ND) came on for Cueto to complete the top of the seventh; retiring the only batter he faced, Alex Jamieson on a fly ball to the gap in right center, as the Dragons were able to get out of a two on, two out spot.
The 8,713 at Fifth Third Field got a taste of the big leagues in the eighth and ninth inning as Belisle got in his two innings of work in a save situation. Belisle retired all six Rays hitters he faced on five ground balls and a strikeout to pick up the save.
The Dragons continue the four game series with the Devil Rays at Fifth Third Field with a 7:05 p.m. first pitch on Saturday night. RHP Robert Manuel (0-0, 1.15 ERA) will start for the Dragons, while the Southwest Michigan will counter with RHP Mike Wlodarczyk (6-3, 2.20 ERA). Saturday's game will be televised live on "Dragons Television," Time Warner Cable Channel 25 with Mike Vander Wood and Reds Hall of Famer Ken Griffey Sr. calling the action. 1410 ESPN Radio WING AM will broadcast the game live beginning with the Dragons pre game show at 6:30 PM.
