Kane County Cougars News Release

Geneva, IL - The first contest of a crucial four-game series between the Kane County Cougars and Peoria Chiefs went to the visitors, 7-5. The Cougars entered the series-opener with a one-game lead over the Chiefs atop the Western Division, both the teams are now tied with three first-half games remaining. Both squads have already qualified for the post-season in September but are battling for the Western Division championship.

Peoria struck first against Jared Lansford in the opening inning, but the Cougars answered in the third versus Chiefs starter Mitch Atkins when Justin Sellers launched a solo home run to left for a 1-1 tie.

After the Chiefs grabbed another lead, 2-1, in the fourth, the Cougars grabbed their only lead of the night in the bottom half. Steve Kleen and Isaac Omura delivered back-to-back run-scoring singles for a 3-2 Kane County advantage.

Lansford, who had only one perfect frame in his five innings, surrendered five runs in the fifth for a 7-3 score and a deficit from which the Cougars never recovered. Omura drove in Kleen, who had doubled, in the sixth to cut it to 7-4. Then Kleen poked a sacrifice fly in the eighth against Chicago Cubs pitcher Scott Williamson, who was making a rehabilitation appearance, for the 7-5 tilt that became the final.

Lansford (5-4) suffered the defeat, Atkins (6-1) got the win and Ed Campusano nailed down his league-leading 20th save. Joe Piekarz and John Herrera each tossed two scoreless relief innings to give the Cougars' offense a chance to come back.

Game Two of the series is Friday night at 6:30 CDT. Vince Mazzaro (6-4, 4.52) pitches for the Cougars (39-27) against left-hander Donnie Veal (4-3, 2.93) for the Chiefs (39-27).
