Fort Wayne, IN - With just five games and four days remaining until the Midwest League All-Star break, the Fort Wayne Wizards announced a change to their pitching staff.
Right-hander Mark Roberts was promoted to the San Diego Padres single-A team, the Lake Elsinore Storm of the California League and right-hander Eddie Pena will rejoin the team from extended spring training in Peoria, Arizona and the triple-A Portland Beavers.
Roberts was 0-0 with a 1.80 earned run average in 15 relief appearances for Fort Wayne. In 20 innings, he allowed 16 hits, eight walks, and struck out 26. Opponents were hitting .225 against Roberts.
Pena comes back to the Wizards after going to the Padres extended spring training facility in mid-May. He also appeared in five games for the Beavers, appearing in five games as a reliever, going 0-0 with a 5.68 ERA and striking out two in 6 1/3 innings of work.
In an off-field move, trainer JoJo Tarantino has returned to his home in Peoria, Arizona to be with his wife, Melissa, for the birth of their first child. Tarantino is expected to rejoin the Fort Wayne staff after the Midwest League All-Star Break.
Wade Yamasaki will handle the trainer duties in the absence of Tarantino. Yamasaki is in his sixth season with the Padres organization and his third with the Peoria Padres.
