Lansing Lugnuts News Release
South Bend, Ind . - The South Bend SilverHawks smacked two home runs off of Lansing starter Billy Carnline en route to a 4-3 win over the Lansing Lugnuts Thursday night at Coveleski Stadium.
The SilverHawks took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning when Leyson Septimo cracked a solo shot to right field. It was his first homer of the season.
Carnline would settle down and retire the next 13 batters before issuing a walk to Ricardo Sosa in the fifth. After Greg Thomson grounded out, Frank Curreri stepped up and blasted a two run shot to left field to push the lead to 3-0.
The SilverHawks added one more run in the next frame when Pedro Ciriaco led the inning off with a single and came home to score later when Leyson Septimo doubled to right field. Ciriaco was holding up at third base, but a throwing error by Jacob Butler allowed him to score to make it a 4-0 lead.
The Lugnuts fought back in the seventh by loading the bases with one out. After Jesus Gonzalez struck out for the second out in the inning, Sean Shoffit drew a walk to push across Anthony Hatch and make the score 4-1. Jacob Butler then singled inside the third base bag to plate Josh Bell and Yuber Rodriguez to pull to within one run at 4-3. However the Lugnuts would leave the tying run stranded at third.
Anthony Cupps got the win for the Hawks, throwing 6 1/3 innings and allowing three runs on five hits.
Billy Carnline suffered the loss, surrendering four runs in six innings. Only three of the runs were earned.
Lansing (39-26) and South Bend (32-32) will play game two of the series on Friday night. Chi-Hung Cheng (5-4, 3.68) will take the hill for the Lugnuts, while Adam Howard (2-1, 2.83) will hurl for the SilverHawks. First pitch is set for 7:00 p.m.
