Kernels snap Beloit, 3-2
June 15, 2006 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
Mark Trumbo drove in the game winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning, scoring Flint Wipke from third as the Kernels (30-37) beat the Beloit Snappers (33- 32) 3-2 in front of 2,200 fans at Veterans Memorial Stadium on Thursday night.
Trumbo singled up the middle with one out, scoring Flint Wipke from third after Flint reached on an error, stole second and went to third on a Brett Martinez sacrifice bunt.
The game saw several Kernel milestones: Nick Adenhart (9-2) pitched eight strong innings to get his ninth win of the season; Ryan Aldridge pitched a near perfect ninth to pick up his 13th save of the season. And Brad Coon extended his hitting streak to eleven games, the longest streak by a Kernel this season.
Beloit starter Ryan Mullins allowed four hits and two runs over the seven innings he pitched. Mullins also struck out eight Kernels, but walked four. David Shinskie (4-5) was tagged with the loss in relief of Mullins.
It was a see-saw affair early as Beloit scored a single run in the second, answered by a Kernel run in the bottom of the inning. The pattern repeated itself in the fifth as Beloit scored in the top of the inning and the Kernels answered in the bottom of the frame.
Marco Albano, Hainley Statia and Mark Trumbo each drove in a run for the Kernels with Albano going 2-3 and Stantrel Smith going 2-4. The Kernels didn't have an extra base hit and three of their seven hits were infield singles. The only extra base hit of the game was a double by Beloit's Henry Sanchez, which resulted in Beloit's second run in the fifth inning.
The Kernels and Snappers meet again on Friday night at Veterans Memorial Stadium. The Original Purple Party Dude, Reggy, will be on hand to entertain fans all game long. The gates open at 6 pm with first pitch at 7.
Tickets are available by ordering on-line at www.kernels.com, or calling the Kernels Ticket Office at (319) 896-7560.
