South Bend Silver Hawks News Release
South Bend - With the South Bend Silver Hawks out of the playoff hunt for the first half of the 2006 Midwest League season, the teams' role has been reduced to spoiler. Thursday night at The Cove, the Silver Hawks played their part well; using home runs by Leyson Septimo and Frank Curreri and clutch bullpen help to secure a 4-3 win over the Lansing Lugnuts (39-26).
Septimo opened the game's scoring in the first. With one out, the lanky right-fielder, deposited a Billy Carnline delivery over the center field wall to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead.
In the fifth, the Hawks increased their lead to three when Frank Curreri drilled a two out pitch the opposite way over the left field wall giving the Hawks a 3-0 lead.
South Bend added the winning run in the sixth. Leyson Septimo's double scored Pedro Ciriaco. Ciriaco singled, advanced to second on a pickoff attempt that was dropped by first baseman David Hicks and crossed the plate on a throwing error by right fielder Jacob Butler, whose attempt to throw out Ciriaco at third failed.
Lansing scored three runs in the seventh inning, but relievers Vince Bongiovanni and Kyler Newby quelled any ideas of a comeback by combining for four strikeouts and giving up one hit in 2.2 innings.
Anthony Cupps (4-3), who threw 6.1 innings, picked up the win. Lansing starter Billy Carnline (5-4)`takes the defeat.
The Silver Hawks (32-32) continue their four game set against the Lansing Lugnuts Friday night with first pitch slated for 7 PM. AM 960 Weekday Sports Beat will broadcast from the Budweiser Bullpen Bar and Grille with Darin Pritchett and Rick Carter serving as hosts.
