Burlington Bees News Release

Clinton, IA (June 15, 2006) The Burlington Bees (33-31) scored four runs in the top of the first innings and Carlos Rosa allowed just three fly balls in 7.1 innings in a 4-1 victory over the Clinton LumberKings (22-44) in the first of a four game series at Alliant Energy Field tonight. The Bees now lead the season series 3-2. With one more win, the Bees can clinch their first winning half since the second half of 1999.

The Bees jumped out early on LumberKings starter Omar Poveda (1-7). With one out in the top of the first, Valentino Arce and Brady Everett delivered back-to-back doubles to get the Bees on the board. After Poveda hit Mario Lisson with a pitch, Miguel Vega lined a double into the left-center field gap that drove in both runners to extend the lead to 3-0. A balk by Poveda moved Vega to third and he scored on a bounce out by Jeff Howell to complete the inning. Following Howells RBI, Poveda struck out the next six batters before Lisson doubled in the third to tie the team-high for doubles in a game. Poveda would tie a season-high with nine strikeouts and worked through six innings. Julian Cordero pitched two scoreless innings in relief and Jose Marte finished with a scoreless ninth.

Rosa (6-3) was masterful in earning his fifth straight winning decision and the team has won seven of his last eight starts. The LumberKings got their only run in the bottom of the second. Freddie Thon and John Whittleman opened the inning with singles. Joe Kemp then hit a bouncing ball to first. Vega fielded the ball and made a good throw to second, but the ball went off the glove of Chris McConnell for an error and rolled out toward left. Thon scored and Whittleman went to third, but the Bees recovered in time to throw out Kemp trying to get to second. Rosa got out of the inning without allowing any more runs by getting KC Herren to popout and after a walk, Alberto Martinez flied out to center.

That fly ball was the last ball hit in the air against Rosa until Martinez flied out to right to lead off the bottom of the eighth. Rosa didnt allow a hit in the span either. Jose Vallejo ended the run with a base hit to right that chased Rosa. Eliezer Garcia came in and walked Matt Smith to bring up John Mayberry as the potential tying run. The Bees turned to Kraig Schambough and he got Mayberry to fly out to right and then struck out Thon to end the threat. He retired the LumberKings in order in the bottom of the ninth and earned his sixth save. The three-hitter was the fewest hits allowed in a game by the Bees since holding the Lansing Lugnuts to two hits on May 16th at Community Field. Rosa started that game as well.

The Bees and LumberKings will continue this series tomorrow night at 7:00 at Alliant Energy Field. The Bees will send RH David Henninger (1- 4, 6.12) to the mound against RH Kyle Rogers (0-4, 4.86). The game will be broadcast live on KBUR AM 1490 and KBKB AM 1360 with the pre-game show starting at 6:40.
