Dayton Dragons News Release
Lansing, MI - The Dayton Dragons (21-33, 51-73) jumped out to a 6-1 lead through five innings then saw the Lansing Lugnuts (23-32, 59-64) tie the game at 6-6 before winning it's third straight in ten innings 8-6 in front of 9,274 at Oldsmobile Park in Lansing on Thursday night.
Adam Rosales has turned into the Dragons first inning spark plug. Heading into Thursday's game, Rosales had four homeruns on the season, three of the four had come in the first inning, including in the game on Wednesday night.
The shortstop turned the trick again in the first on Thursday, taking Russ Savickas (ND) deep and out to left for a 1-0 Dayton lead and his fourth first inning HR of the season. With two down and Tonys Gutierrez at second base, Chris Kroski lifted a pop up to shallow left that Ryan Klosterman dropped, scoring Gutierrez for a 2-0 and extending the inning. Trevor Lawhorn singled to right driving home Kroski from second and giving Dayton a 3-0 advantage.
The Lugnuts picked up a run off Camilo Vazquez in the bottom half of the first inning to pull within two at 3-1. Jason Armstrong drew a lead off walk and moved to third on a Christian Snavely single to right. Eric Nielsen got the run home with a fielder's choice grounder to third base, forcing Snavely at second. That would be the only blemish on the night for Vazquez who left after 5.0 innings of work.
The Dragons added another pair of runs in the top of the third inning with Lawhorn once again supplying the offense. Gutierrez picked up a one out walk and moved to second base on a single to left by Jeremiah Piepkorn. Kroski's infield single loaded the bases for Lawhorn who delivered his second and third RBI of the night with a double into the left field corner scoring Gutierrez and Piepkorn and the Dragons advantage moved to 5-1. The Dragons added a final run off Savickas in the fifth inning to take a 6-1 lead on a Gutierrez triple and an error by the third baseman Armstrong.
While Vazquez was outstanding in his 5.0 innings of work, the bullpen for the Dragons was not. Alexander Farfan (ND) came on and was wild once again, allowing two walks and a hit batsman and three runs on just one hit in 0.2 innings. Farfan allowed a sac fly to Yuber Rodriguez and two RBI single to .188 hitting catcher David Corrente, to get Lansing within 6-4. Zac Stott came on with a second and third two out mess he inherited from Farfan and pitched out of it, getting a pop up to short.
The Lugnuts tied the game off Ramon Ramirez (W, 3-6) in the bottom of the seventh. Ramirez gave up a lead off single to Armstrong down the line in left on the second pitch of the inning. With Armstrong at first, Snavely tied the ball game up on a shot down the line in right for a two run blast. Snavely's 11th homer of the season evened the game at 6-6 and brought the Lugnuts all the way back from down five entering the sixth inning.
Dayton took the advantage with a pair in the top of the 10th inning off Lugnut reliever Scott Roy (L, 3-4). Roy walked the lead off man Rosales and hit Gutierrez to put runners at first and second. A fly ball to left moved Rosales to third with one down. Kroski's sac fly to center scored the winning run as Rosales tagged and came home to give Dayton a 7-6 lead. An errant pickoff throw from Roy moved Gutierrez from first to third with two down. Lawhorn completed a four RBI night with an infield single to give the Dragons a two run lead at 8-6.
Ramirez picked up two outs and allowed two hits in the bottom of the tenth inning before running out of pitches and giving way to James Morrison (SV, 3). Morrison struck out Rodriguez with the tying runner at first to end the game and save the victory for Ramirez.
The Dragons open a four game series at South Bend beginning on Friday night.
The first game of the series from Coveleski Stadium begins at 8:00 PM, with RHP Homer Bailey getting the start for the Dragons. The Silver Hawks will counter with RHP Chris Kinsey. The pre game show begins on 1410 ESPN Radio WING AM at 7:30 PM.
