Quad Cities River Bandits News Release

The Swing of the Quad Cities rallied from a 4-1 deficit to tie the Beloit Snappers in the top of the seventh inning, but Beloit struck back with three runs in the bottom half and held the Swing scoreless the rest of the way as Quad Cities lost, 7-4, on Thursday at Pohlman Field. The Swing (65-56, 29-23) have dropped three straight contests, but remain ahead of both Burlington and Kane County as they return home for a ten-game homestand, their final home stretch of the regular season.

The Snappers struck first, as Chris Brown ripped a two-out solo homer to center in the bottom of the second inning. The blast was Brown's tenth of the season, and gave Beloit a 1-0 lead.

The Swing tied it up immediately, tallying in the top of the third inning. Jake Mullinax drilled a double to the wall in left-center, and then Spencer Wyman moved him to third with a bunt. Matt Shepherd's one-out chopper to first base plated Mullinax for a 1-1 tie.

Beloit retook the lead in the bottom of the third inning. Javi Sanchez reached when Jake Mullinax mishandled his drag bunt attempt to start the inning, and then Landon Burt dropped a sacrifice to the first base side. Spencer Wyman fielded the bunt cleanly but his throw sailed down the right field line and Sanchez came around to score all the way from first. Nick Webber coaxed three straight soft groundouts to keep the damage at one run, as the Snappers led 2-1 after three.

Beloit added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Mullinax mishandled a sharp grounder from Sanchez, and then Deacon Burns tripled him home. David Winfree knocked home the second run of the inning when he singled past a drawn-in infield for a 4-1 Snappers advantage.

The Swing got both runs back in the top of the sixth inning. Nick Stavinoha led off the frame with a solo homer to straightaway center, his seventh of the season and his third in the last week alone. Mike Ferris, Chris Patrick and Juan Lucena followed with three consecutive singles, and then Mullinax knocked home Patrick to slice the Snappers lead to 4-3.

The Swing evened the score in the seventh frame, as Matt Lemanczyk led off with a single and stole second with two outs. Mike Ferris dropped a two-out, two-strike flare single into center to score Lemanczyk for a 4-4 score.

But Beloit rallied for three runs in the bottom of the seventh. Sanchez doubled but was put out at third on a sacrifice attempt, and Burns bounced out for the second out of the frame. But Winfree reached on an infield single, and then Galesburg native Jeremy Pickrel smoked a triple into the right field corner, scoring both runners for a 6-4 Snappers lead. Trevor Plouffe closed the scoring with an RBI single to right.

Webber lost his second straight outing for the Swing, as he was charged with seven runs (five earned) in 6.2 innings of work, striking out three and walking none. Jaymie Torres got the final four outs without incident for the Swing.

UP NEXT: The Swing begin a six-game series with the Peoria Chiefs on Friday night, with a doubleheader scheduled to begin at 5:00 with the Peoria Chiefs. The Swing will send Matt Scherer (9-6, 3.40) to the hill against Grant Johnson (2-6, 3.64) in the first game, with spot starters Tyler Adamczyk of the Swing and Walt Nolen of the Chiefs squaring off.
