Kane County Cougars News Release
Geneva, IL - The Kane County Cougars had a chance in the bottom of the ninth to tie the West Michigan Whitecaps on Thursday night. The bases were loaded with two outs in an 8-4 contest, but a strikeout ended the threat and the game. The loss gave the Cougars a split with the 'Caps and kept Kane County tied with Burlington for the second playoff spot in the Western Division.
The Cougars jumped ahead in the second inning off Dallas Trahern. Travis Buck singled, and Jose Pineda cracked a two-run homer for a 2-0 score. Kane County lefty Ryan Ford cruised through the first two frames but ran into trouble in the fourth, allowing four runs in the third and then another in the fifth for a 5-2 deficit. Ford left after six innings, gave up five runs on eight hits, walked two and struck out three.
Tomas Cabaniel relieved the southpaw but surrendered three tallies in the seventh for an 8-2 game. The Cougars rallied in the seventh thanks to a homer from Raul Padron to cut it to 8-3, and then pushed harder in the ninth against Anthony Tomey. With two outs and nobody on base, Pineda and Padron walked, and Gregorio Petit singled in a run for an 8-4 affair. After Cliff Pennington walked to load the bases, the Whitecaps brought in Kevin Whelan, who struck out Luis Perez to end the game.
Ford (12-7) lost for only the third time in 10 starts, Trahern (7-10) got the win and Whelan recorded his fifth save. The Cougars (28-26) continue their eight-game homestand at 6:30 CDT on Friday night against the Beloit Snappers, who have joined Kane County and Burlington in the tie for the postseason berth. Ryan Webb (5-10, 4.35) takes the mound against the Snappers' Matt Garza (1-2, 3.44).
