Lansing Lugnuts News Release
LANSING- Chris Kroski's sacrifice fly in the top of the 10th inning scored Adam Rosales with the go-ahead run and Trevor Lawhorn would later add an RBI single, his fourth RBI of the game as the Dayton Dragons(51-73, 21-33) delivered a devastating blow to the Lugnuts playoff hopes with a 8-6, 10-inning win in front of an energized 9,274 fans on Thursday evening at Oldsmobile Park. The loss by Lansing(59-64, 22-32) combined with Southwest Michigan's 5-2 win over Cedar Rapids earlier in the day sends the Lugnuts six games back of the final playoff spot with 16 games left.
Rosales homered with one out in the first off Russ Savickas(ND) to open the scoring as the solo shot made it 1-0. Dayton wasn't done, though. The Dragons took advantage of an error by Ryan Klosterman later in the frame that allowed Tonys Gutierrez to score and Lawhorn drove in Kroski with a single to make it 3-0.
Lansing battled back with a run in the bottom of the first off Camilo Vazquez(ND) as Jason Armstrong drew a walk, went to third on a single by Christian Snavely and scored on a fielders choice by Eric Nielsen.
The Dragons increased their lead to 5-1 in the third on a two-run double by Lawhorn and made it 6-1 in the fifth when Gutierrez tripled with one out and scored on a throwing error by Armstrong.
After Vazquez had handcuffed the Lansing bats through five innings, his bullpen gave away his shot at his fifth win. Alexander Farfan's struggles continued in the sixth as he allowed three runs after walking two hitters, hitting one and allowing a sacrifice fly to Yuber Rodriguez and a two-out, two-run single to David Corrente.
Ramon Ramirez(3-6) got the eventual relief win for Dayton, working 3.2 innings, but his night started off just as shaky as Farfan's had. Armstong greeted him with a single to open the 7th and Snavely belted his 11th homer directly behind the leadoff hit to tie the game at six.
The score remained knotted until the 10th when Rosales earned a leadoff walk from Scott Roy(3-4) and went to second when Roy hit Gutierrez with a pitch on a bunt attempt by the Dragons first baseman. Jeremiah Piepkorn flew out to deep left to send Rosales to third and Kroski followed with his sacrifice fly to center to put the Dragons ahead. Roy then errantly threw wide of first to send Gutierrez to third and Lawhorn scored him with an infield single.
In the bottom of the 10th, Ramirez allowed a pair of singles to Eric Nielsen and Klosterman, but James Morrison came in and struck out Rodriguez to end the game.
With the win, Dayton takes three of four from the Lugnuts and dropped the Lansing record on the homestand to a disappointing 2-6.
The Lugnuts will now head back to the road as they travel to Appelton, Wisconsin to open a four-game series with the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers on Friday evening. Game time from Fox Cities Stadium is set for 8:05 p.m. EST and the Lugnuts will send left hander Chi-Hung Cheng(6-6) to the hill. Wisconsin counters with right hander Randy Frye(2-4).
