Kane County Cougars News Release
GENEVA, IL - The Kane County Cougars, in conjunction with the Oakland Athletics, announced today that top prospect Javier Herrera has been placed on the disabled list with a left wrist strain. Back in the lineup for tonight's 7:00 p.m. contest against the West Michigan Whitecaps (Class A Affiliate of the Detroit Tigers), Nick Blasi is activated from the disabled list.
Tagged the Northwest League's Player of the Year while with the Vancouver Canadians (Short-A) last season, Herrera appeared in 88 games prior to landing on the DL. Hitting .278, the Venezuelan has produced 96 hits, including 17 doubles and two triples. Slugging thirteen long balls, Herrera has driven in 61 teammates thus far in the 2005 season. Signed as a non-drafted free agent in July 2001, Herrera emerged in the professional baseball arena that season in the Dominican Summer League (Rookie) and spent the following year in the Arizona Rookie League. Collecting three NWL Player of the Week (6/20-6/27, 7/19-7/25 & 8/16-8/22) and July Player of the Month honors with the Short-A squad in 2004, the league MVP slugged a .331 batting average with 12 home runs and 47 RBI.
Outfielder Nick Blasi ended up on the disabled list on August 2, 2005 after appearing in 100 games for the Cougars this season. A Wichita, Kansas native, Blasi is currently posting a .258 average with 44 RBI and three home runs. The Wichita State University graduate joined the A's organization in 2004, as he was selected in the 12th round of that year's June draft. Oakland sent Blasi to Vancouver (Short-A, Northwest) to make his professional debut where he hit .299 while knocking in 26 fellow Canadians.
The Cougars look to wash out the Whitecaps in the final game of the four-game set this evening before the Beloit Snappers (Class A Affiliate of the Minnesota Twins) come to Geneva tomorrow night for a four-game set. The weekend series features two explosive fireworks shows (Friday & Saturday), a visit from BirdZerk! (Friday) and the team's annual Bark in the Park (Monday).
