Hawks puncture Peoria pitching

South Bend, IN -The most hits the South Bend Silver Hawks recorded in a game this season was 17 back on May 16 against the Southwest Michigan Devil Rays. Thursday night, the Silver Hawks torched the Peoria Chiefs pitching staff, with a breakout performance of 21 hits in their 12-5 win over the Chiefs.

The Hawks started a picket fence of scoring in the first two innings. Alberto Gonzales scored on a Carlos Gonzales single to right field in the first and Billy Lockin's sacrifice fly to left plated Jereme Milons in the second to give the Hawks a 2-0 lead.

The Hawks owned a 4-1 lead until the sixth when Peoria put three on the board. With one out, Ryan Harvey singled up the middle and cruised home on Jesses Schmidt's double to center field making it 4-2 South Bend. Drew Larsen then followed with a two run blast that left the park and knotted the game at four.

The Hawks wasted little time getting the runs back. Billy Lockin led off with a single to left and advanced to second when Peoria reliever Mike Jones let loose with a wild pitch. Alberto Gonzales then doubled to left field chasing Lockin to third. Wilkin Castillo's single through the hole at short plated Lockin and moved Alberto Gonzales to third. Mike Jones then released another wild pitch by scoring Alberto Gonzales making it 6-4 South Bend. With Wilkin Castillo on second after the second Mike Jones wild pitch, Augie Murillo singled to right-center field for a 7-4 Silver Hawks lead. Orlando Mercado's double to left field doubled the Hawks scoring in the inning when Murillo crossed the plate.

The Hawks added three more runs in the seventh, with the big hit being a Carlos Gonzalez two run double.

South Bend's Kellen Raab (6-5) picked up the win, while Mike Jones (0-3) suffered the loss.

The Silver Hawks (73-50) open a four game set against the Dayton Dragons at the Cove Friday. Chris Kinsey (4-2) will get the nod for the birds.
