'Dogs suffer third straight loss

The Connecticut Defenders scored two runs in the top of the 11th inning to beat the Sea Dogs, 9-7 in 11 innings on Saturday night. Portland's dropped three straight at Hadlock Field for only the second time this season but remains three games over the Trenton Thunder for the top spot in the division.

Randy Walter picked up a bases-loaded, bunt-single in the 11th off Kyle Jackson to plate in the game-winner. Todd Jennings drew a walk to force in the game's final run. Portland sent the game to extra-innings by scoring three, two-out runs in the bottom of the ninth inning off Joe Bateman. Jacoby Ellsbury, who finished the night 4-for-5, 3 RBI doubled in Zach Borowiak for the first run of the inning. Brandon Moss blasted a two-run double off the Maine Monster and scored the tying run on a throwing error by Aaron Sisk.

Jeff Peterson (1-0) worked one scoreless inning to earn the victory for Connecticut. Rusty Tucker suffered his second loss of the season, allowing two walks and one run over one and 1/3 innings pitched.

R.D. Spiehs recorded his second save of the season, retiring Alberto Concepcion on a flyball to the warning track in left field with runners at first and second.

Devern Hansack picked up a quality start for the Sea Dogs, working six and 2/3 innings on three earned runs and seven hits.

Notes...Chris Durbin extended his hitting streak to six games...Portland needs to win the final game against Connecticut on Sunday afternoon to win the season series...The Sea Dogs committed a season-high, five errors, leading to four unearned runs...Brian Buscher, Bob Stanley and Dusty Brown were all ejected for arguing balls and strikes
