Trenton Thunder News Release
(Akron, OH)- Randy Ruiz, Eric Duncan and Omir Santos combined for seven RBI, while Justin Christian set a new single-season record for stolen bases as the Thunder beat Akron, 7-5, on Saturday night. The win was the 50th of the season for the Thunder (50-42).
Trenton took a 1-0 lead off Akron starter Sean Smith in the 1st Inning on an Eric Duncan RBI double but Akron (55-36) got that run back against Tyler Clippard in the bottom of the first with an RBI single by 3B Kevin Kouzmanoff. The Aeros then took advantage of four walks in the 2nd Inning by Clippard to score twice and take a 3-1 lead. But Clippard settled down and didn't allow the Aeros a hit over the next three innings. Clippard (5-10) allowed three runs on two hits in five innings for the win.
The Thunder started their rally with a run in the 3rd Inning on an RBI double by Ruiz to cut the deficit to 3-2. Trenton then added four runs in the 5th Inning to take the lead. Santos had an RBI double in the inning along with a two-run double by Ruiz. Smith (8-2) took the loss allowing six runs on seven hits in four innings. In that inning, Christian stole his 48th base of the season, breaking the single-season Trenton record set by Kevin Thompson (47) in 2003.
Akron scored twice off Trenton's Justin Pope in the 8th Inning to cut their deficit to 7-5, but Pope struck out Kouzmanoff with a man on base in the 9th Inning for the final out.
The series wraps up on Sunday at 2:05 PM. Matt DeSalvo (2-1, 5.82) starts for Trenton against Akron's Aaron Laffey (3-2, 4.04).
