Dogs Strand Season-High 15 in 8-5 Loss

July 22, 2018 - American Association (AA) - Chicago Dogs News Release

Rosemont, Ill. - The Dogs left a season-high 15 men on base, and stranded the bases loaded in three separate innings en route to an 8-5 loss Saturday night at Impact Field.

In the longest nine inning game of the season for Chicago, the Dogs allowed 14 Canaries hits, including four Sioux Falls home runs over three hours and 29 minutes at a rainy Impact Field.

The Canaries set the tone for the game with back-to-back shots from David Bergin and Jabari Henry in the top of the second inning. Both home runs were given up by Chicago starter Kylin Turnbull.

The Dogs answered with one run of their own in the bottom of the second inning thanks to two hits and two walks, including a bases loaded free pass drawn by Mike Falsetti that scored Rubi Silva. The walk was the first of three drawn in the game by the Chicago catcher, who reached base four times on the night.

In a harbinger of things to come however, Chicago couldn't capitalize any further against Sioux Falls starter Dylan Thompson and left the bases loaded.

Sioux Falls took a 3-1 lead in the top of the third inning on an RBI ground out from Maxx Garrett, before Patrick Fiala made it 4-1 with an RBI single in the fourth inning.

The Dogs evened the game at 4-4 thanks to three unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. The Canaries committed two errors in the frame and four overall on the night.

Chicago would give the lead right back to Sioux Falls however, as Henry hit his second home run of the night, a three run shot in the top of the seventh. Much like the Chicago half of the sixth, the Canaries benefitted from two Dogs errors in the top of the seventh, and all three runs were unearned.

The Dogs cut the deficit to 7-5 on a Silva home run to lead off the home half of the seventh, but Chicago left four men on base in their final two innings, and ultimately lost 8-5.

Henry and Bergin each homered twice in the game. Sioux Falls has now homered seven times in the first two games of the series.

Turnbull pitched three and two-thirds innings, allowing four earned runs on eight hits, and receiving a no-decision. Conversely, Thompson, who was making his third start of the season against Chicago, allowed one earned run in five and two-thirds innings and also received a no-decision.

The game saw six combined errors and seven of the 13 combined runs were unearned.

Chicago falls to 23-36 on the season with the loss, while the Canaries move to 25-34 with the win. The two teams will play the rubber match of their three game weekend set Sunday.

First pitch from Impact Field is scheduled for 1:05 p.m. The game will be broadcast at with the Crowne Plaza Pregame Show beginning at 12:45 p.m.
