Albany Devils News Release

ALBANY, N.Y. - The Albany Devils concluded their season with a 2-1 setback against the Syracuse Crunch Sunday at the Times Union Center. The Devils finish with a 31-34-6-5 record, while the Crunch earned a spot in the Calder Cup Playoffs with the victory, giving them a 37-29-5-5 mark.

"We had some good chance and we just couldn't bury," said head coach Rick Kowalsky. "It's been a bit of a story this year. You know for our last game, I thought that was the best of the weekend. I was proud of the guys that they didn't mail it in and they played hard. We just couldn't capitalize on our chances."

Rookie goaltender Maxime Clermont, who was reassigned by New Jersey to Albany from Kalamazoo (ECHL) Saturday, made his second career start and turned away 21 saves. Most notably, he denied Syracuse's Kyle Cumiskey late in the first period with a sprawling save near the right post.

Mattias Tedenby scored for the second-straight night and opened the scoring with 5.5 seconds remaining in the first period with a power-play goal. He was setup by quick passing by Brandon Burlon and Matt Anderson.

Syracuse's netminder Iiro Tarkki shut the door the rest of the way and finished with 34 saves for his 24th win of the season. His team will be seeded seventh in the postseason and will matchup with second-seeded St. John's.

Tarkki received offensive support from John Mitchell at 2:57 of the second period and rookie Emerson Etem netted the game-winning goal during a goal-mouth scramble at 12:13 of the same period.

Despite the setback, the Devils, who outshot the Crunch 35-23, fared well at the Times Union Center this season, going 18-13-4-3.
