HOUSTON --- Joel Broda and Kris Foucault each had a goal as the Houston Aeros defeated the Texas Stars 2-1 to clinch the eighth seed in the AHL's Western Conference Sunday night at the Toyota Center in front of a sellout crowd of 10,652.
Matt Hackett made 28 saves for the Aeros, which finish the regular season 35-25-5-11 with 86 points. The Aeros advanced to the AHL's Calder Cup playoffs for the second straight year and fourth time in the last five years.
Broda scored his 14th goal of the season 31 seconds into the third period to give the Aeros a 2-1 advantage.
Foucault tied the game at 1-1 at 17:27 in the second period with his 14th goal of the season.
Brenden Dillon scored at 11:28 in the second to put Texas ahead 1-0.
Houston will face the top-seeded Oklahoma City Barons at 7:05 p.m. Thursday at Toyota Center in Game 1 of a best-of-five first round playoff series. Game 2 will be at 7:35 p.m. Friday at Toyota Center.
