
Despite Late Rally, Black Bears Fall Short to Muckdogs 10-6

Despite a three-run rally in the ninth inning, the West Virginia Black Bears were defeated 10-6 by the Batavia Muckdogs Sunday afternoon at Monongalia County Ballpark. With the loss, West Virginia falls to 6-10 overall this season while Batavia improves to 5-11 with the win.
The Muckdogs jumped to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning before exploding for 6 runs in the second inning to chase SP Hector Garcia. RP Jonathan Minier came into the game with one out in the second inning and continued to pitch 3.2 scoreless innings, striking out six batters. The Black Bears offense came alive in the fourth inning when OF Logan Hill delivered a single to left scoring IF Kevin Kramer. Hill's RBI single was followed by an RBI single from 3B Daniel Arribas to cut the Batavia lead to 7-2.
West Virginia scored again in the fifth inning on an RBI double that was lined to left field by IF Kevin Kramer. Batavia cross three more runs in the sixth to extend their lead to 10-3 and team were scoreless until the bottom of the ninth when the Black Bears started to rally. DH Chris Harvey delivered an RBI double and then went on to score on a single by 1B Albert Baur that was hit up the middle. The Black Bears would score one more run to cut the lead to 10-6 but fell short leaving the tying run on deck.
SP Hector Garcia was tagged with the loss (1-1) after pitching only 1.1 innings and surrendering seven runs (all earned) on four hits and three walks. Batavia reliever Scott Squier picked up his first win of the season (1-0) after tossing 5.0 innings.
The Black Bears return to action Monday, July 6 at 7:05 p.m. when they play the Batavia Muckdogs in the final game of the series. It is Back to the Future Night at Monongalia County Ballpark and the team will be wearing special jerseys that will be auctioned off with all proceeds going to Stepping Stones.
