Vermont Lake Monsters News Release

NORWICH, CT --- Three Vermont pitchers combined on a three-hit shutout, the offense scored six runs for the third straight game and the defense turned three double plays as the Lake Monsters snapped a two-game losing streak with a 6-0 New York-Penn League victory Sunday evening at Dodd Stadium.

Starter Kyle Friedrichs, relievers Kevin Ferreras and Tyler Painton each tossed three scoreless innings with one strikeout apiece. Freidrichs did not allow a hit in his three innings and walked the leadoff batter in both the second and third, but the next Tigers hitter bounced into a double play in both innings.

Ferreras (1-1) allowed Connecticut's first hit (a Kade Scivicque leadoff single in the fifth) and loaded the bases with one out in the sixth (two walks and hit batter), but got out of the inning with the third Vermont double play. Painton allowed a leadoff single in the seventh and two-out single in the ninth to close out the shutout and earn his second save of season.

Vermont would get all the offense it would need in the third as Trace Loehr led off with a single, advanced to second on a groundout and scored on a Stephen Pallares RBI double to rightcenter. After a pair of walks loaded the bases, Pallares scored on a Nick Collins RBI groundout and Seth Brown followed with an RBI single for the 3-0 lead. The Lake Monsters scored two more times in the fourth on sacrifice flies from Pallares and Chris Iriart, then Pallares got his second sac fly and third RBI of the game in the sixth inning.

Richie Martin continued his hot start with the Lake Monsters, going 3-for-5 for the second straight day including his first triple. In his four games with Vermont, the 2015 Oakland first-round pick is 10-for-19 (.526) with five runs, a double, triple, homer and four RBI. Brown was 2-for-4 and Loehr 1-for-3 with two runs for as the Lake Monsters scored six runs or more for the fifth time in their last six games (35 total runs).

Connecticut starter Sandy Baez (1-2) allowed three runs on five hits over five innings to take the loss, while Dominic Moreno tossed three scoreless innings and Scivicque had two of the Tigers three hits.

Vermont (6-10) will look to take two-of-three in the series at Connecticut (8-8) on Monday and earn a split in the six-game roadtrip before a scheduled off day on Tuesday. The Lake Monsters will return to historic Centennial Field on Wednesday to begin a six-game homestand against the Mahoning Valley Scrappers and West Virginia Black Bears through July 13th.
