The Staten Island Yankees (10-7) defeated the Hudson Valley Renegades (8-8) by the score of 3-2 on a sunny Sunday afternoon at the Richmond County Bank Ballpark at St. George.
The Yankees scored one run in three consecutive innings from the second to the fourth. Jhalan Jackson got Staten Island on the board first in the second inning with an RBI groundout to short, scoring Griffin Gordon. Jackson is tied for the team lead with ten RBI. Kyle Holder scored the Yankees' second run of the game on a Gordon single to right field in the bottom of the third. Zack Zehner, then tacked on another run in the bottom of the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly to give Staten Island a 3-0 lead that they would not relinquish.
Yankees' starter Luis Cedeno (W, 2-1) cruised through six innings of four-hit ball. He struck out three, walked only one batter, and didn't give up a run. He improved his season ERA to 1.33.
The only two runs the Renegades scored were on a two-RBI double by shortstop Jake Cronenworth off of relief pitcher Mark Seyler. They did record a game-high nine hits in the loss; Cronenworth collected three hits, Joe McCarthy had two, while Cade Gotta, Manny Sanchez, Angel Moreno and Oscar Sanay each had one hit apiece. Nic Wilson drew the only walk for the Renegades.
Hudson Valley starting pitcher, Travis Ott (L, 1-1) struggled to find the plate on Sunday. He lasted only four innings, issuing four walks, four hits, three runs, and struck out only one batter. Relievers Tim Ingram and Cristopher Crisotomo combined for four shutout innings out of the bullpen.
Yankees reliever Josh Roeder recorded his first save of the season while blanking Renegade bats for 1.2 innings, striking out two. Staten Island only had five hits on the afternoon. Thairo Estrada and Gordon each had two hits, with Jake Hernandez having one. Estrada swiped his second bag of the season to continue his strong start. Brandon Wagner walked three times on the day and Kyle Holder recorded his fourth error of the season.
The Renegades and Yankees will wrap up the series on Monday night at 7 p.m. for Staten Island Pride Night, sponsored by Amida Care.
