Hudson Valley Renegades News Release
Staten Island, NY (7/5/15)- The Hudson Valley Renegades fell to the Staten Island Yankees by a score of 3-2 on Sunday afternoon at Richmond County Bank Ballpark.
The Yankees took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning on an RBI ground out by right fielder Jhalen Jackson, scoring designated hitter Griffin Gordon who led off the inning with a single. Staten Island's lead became 2-0 when Gordon drove in shortstop Kyle Holder with a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the third inning. The Yankees advantage increased to 3-0 in the bottom of the fourth inning on an RBI sacrifice fly by left fielder Zack Zehner.
The score remained 3-0 in favor of Staten Island until the top of the eighth inning when Hudson Valley cut the deficit to 3-2. With one out, both second baseman Oscar Sanay and right fielder Cade Gotta singled and came around to score on a two-run double by second baseman Jake Cronenworth. But Staten Island's Josh Roeder came in and recorded the final five outs to pick up the save.
With the result, Hudson Valley falls to 8-8 on the season while Staten Island improves to 10-7. Staten Island's starting pitcher Luis Cedeno (2-1) earned the win after throwing six shut out innings, allowing just four hits and struck out three.
Travis Ott (1-1) took the loss for Hudson Valley, allowing three runs off four hits in four innings of work. Renegades relievers Tim Ingram and Cris Crisostomo combined to throw four shut out innings out of the bullpen.
Notes: Renegades designated hitter Joe McCarthy picked up his first professional hit when doubled in the top of the fifth inning. McCarthy was drafted by the Tampa Bay Rays in the fifth round of June's First Year Player Draft and was recently part of the University of Virginia baseball team that won the NCAA College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska.
Hudson Valley concludes their three-game series against Staten Island on Monday, July 6th, with first pitch set for 7:00pm. The Renegades return to Dutchess Stadium on Wednesday, July 8th as they host the Brooklyn Cyclones with first pitch at 7:05pm. Wednesday evening is "Bee-do! Bee-do! Night" presented by DKI.
