Auburn Doubledays News Release
AUBURN, NY - Landon Beck was dominant in his second start against Auburn this season and led State College to a 7-1 victory.
The Spikes took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning, and never looked back. Mike Pritchard singled and Casey Grayson walked to put runners on first and second. After Grayson walked, Leobaldo Pina drove them both in with a double to left center.
In the bottom of the first, the Doubledays scored their only run of the night. Andrew Stevenson led off with a single, his first of three, and was moved over to third by Max Schrock's double. David Kerian then stepped in and drove in Stevenson with a sacrifice fly.
State College added insurance runs in a big third inning when all nine hitters stepped up to the plate. Spitz, Pritchard, and Harrison Bader were the first three hitters up and all three scored. Spitz and Pritchard scored on a two-run single by Grayson. Bader later scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Pina.
Auburn's only threat after the first came in the third. Stevenson singled and Schrock walked with one out, but both were stranded as Kerian struck out and Matt Page flied out to left.
The Spikes scored their final two runs in the seventh when Jesse Jenner launched a two-run homer over the left field wall, his first of his professional career. Earlier in the game he also notched a double, which at the time was the only extra-base hit of his career.
Beck cruised through six innings of work, his longest start of the season. His line was 6 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, and 8 K. Beck was followed up by Pedro Echemendia and Jacob Evans who combined for the following line: 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, and 3 K. Joan Baez took the loss for the Doubledays after 2.2 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 3 BB, and 2 K.
Auburn and State College square off at 7:05 PM on Monday in the rubber match of the three-game series. Mariano Rivera III makes his first professional start for Auburn against Greg Tomchick for State College, who is also making his first professional start.
