Mahoning Valley Scrappers News Release
The Mahoning Valley Scrappers (5-11) dropped the second game of a three-game series 4-3 to the Aberdeen IronBirds (8-9) at Eastwood Field on Sunday afternoon.
Aberdeen jumped out first when Cedric Mullins scored on a wild pitch by Kieran Lovegrove. Mullins had led off the inning with a walk.
The Scrappers responded in the bottom of the first thanks to an RBI double for Emmanuel Tapia to score Willi Castro. Mahoning Valley and Aberdeen were tied at the end of the first.
In the top of the fourth, Randy Gassaway singled to right, which scored Austin Pfeiffer. Mike Odenwaelder hit a hard ground ball to shortstop. Castro and Mathias tried to turn a double play, but Odenwaelder was safe at first. That play allowed Steve Laurino to score. Aberdeen led 3-1 at the end of the fourth.
Odenwaelder then singled to left in the top of the sixth to score Laurino to score again.
In the bottom of the seventh, David Armendariz took the first pitch of the at-bat over the left field wall for his first home run of the season.
Mahoning Valley had the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth. Daniel Salters hit a hard single between first and second. Li-Jen Chu scored the third run of the day for Mahoning Valley, and Tapia tried to tie it at the plate, but was thrown out trying to tie it.
The Scrappers threatened to tie in the ninth. Ka'ai Tom walked and stole second. The tying run was in scoring position, but Chu struck out swinging.
Aberdeen goes for the sweep tomorrow night at 7:05 at Eastwood Field before the Scrappers head out on the road for three games in Vermont and another three in Lowell.
