Charlotte Checkers News Release

CHARLOTTE, NC - In his first season in Charlotte, forward Derek Ryan has been named team captain.

After rotating through captains for the duration of the team's season-starting road trip, head coach Mark Morris officially named Ryan captain prior to the Checkers' home opener.

Ryan, 28, signed with the Hurricanes this past offseason, coming to play pro hockey in North America for the first time in his career. After four years of junior hockey and four years at the University of Alberta, Ryan spent three seasons in Austria, twice leading his team in goals. Last season, the Washington native led the Swedish Hockey League in scoring and was named MVP. He currently leads the Checkers in goals with six through his first 10 games.

Ryan is now the fourth captain in team history. Michal Jordan took on the mantle last season after a three-year run by Brett Sutter, who followed inaugural captain Bryan Rodney.
